The "Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl" of Bengal
The narrator introduces the case, comparing it to the Bollywood movie Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl. A fraudster swindled women out of sums ranging from ₹3.8 lakhs to ₹64 lakhs by promising marriage.
Victims included government employees, interior designers, and managing directors. The scammer was caught by the Kamarkundu Cyber Police (Hooghly District) in a dramatic operation.
Upon arrest, police discovered the scale of the fraud: over 20 victims and a total scammed amount exceeding ₹3 Crores.
The video is made in direct collaboration with the Hooghly Rural Cyber Police, specifically citing inputs from SI Abhishek Ghosh (Investigating Officer) and IPS Kamanasish Sen (Superintendent of Police).
The Story of the Victim ("Puja Das")
The narrative focuses on a victim given the pseudonym "Puja Das" from Singur. She is a 29-year-old state government employee who subscribed to Bharat Matrimony in December 2024.
She met a man named "Anupam Roy" on the site. Anupam presented himself as a handsome, well-spoken owner of a rice mill in Bardhaman.
Anupam claimed to be an orphan, which emotionally manipulated Puja's mother and grandmother, who accepted him as their own son.
Crucial Detail: Communication was strictly via WhatsApp messages and audio calls. Anupam never agreed to video calls or face-to-face meetings, citing network issues, meetings, or medical emergencies.
The Scam Execution
In January 2025, Anupam claimed the Income Tax department had raided his rice mill and frozen his accounts. He asked for ₹9 lakhs urgently.
Puja transferred the money. Anupam sent a fake bank deposit slip (with a forged manager's signature and stamp) claiming he had returned the money, but it would take time to credit due to the frozen account.
The Police Investigation
The case was initially looked at by Lady SI Mou Hira, then taken over by SI Abhishek Ghosh.
Dead End: The phone number used by "Anupam" could not be traced via standard location tracking because the scammer used a Wi-Fi dongle for WhatsApp calls and kept no active SIM card in his phone to avoid tower location detection.
The Money Trail: Police tracked one of the bank accounts receiving funds (₹32 lakhs) to a man named Abhishek Roy, a model in Garia, Kolkata.
Abhishek Roy revealed he met a man named Jamir Abbas at a party. Jamir posed as a businessman needing an account to avoid tax issues and offered Abhishek a 10-20% commission to use his account.
Police raided the home of Jamir’s brother, Jahir Abbas, in Khanakul. They learned Jamir lived in a rented house on Bellilious Road, Howrah, but he had already fled.
The Arrest
Police monitored a specific phone number Jamir rarely used. When it was finally switched on, the location traced to Mandarmani, a beach town in East Medinipur.
SI Abhishek Ghosh and his team went to Mandarmani in plain clothes, posing as tourists.
Knowing Jamir’s taste for a lavish lifestyle (expensive alcohol, luxury watches, women), they targeted the most expensive resort in the area.
The police arrested the culprit, Sheikh Mohammad Jamir Abbas, at the luxury hotel.
The Revelation
The Real Identity: The man posing as "Anupam Roy" was actually Sheikh Mohammad Jamir Abbas. The photos he used belonged to an innocent South Indian model whose images Jamir had stolen from social media.
Target Demographic: He specifically targeted working, wealthy Bengali Hindu women aged 28+ who were desperate to settle down.
Police found evidence of scams on multiple sites (Jeevansathi, Bengali Matrimony, etc.). Amounts scammed included ₹64 lakhs, ₹43 lakhs, ₹6 lakhs, etc.
Worst Case: A victim from Bardhaman gave him ₹44 lakhs in cash and 18 bhori (approx 200g) of gold. Her uncle had to sell property to meet these demands.
Accomplices and Recovery
Jamir didn't work alone. He had accomplices who posed as his managers/staff to collect cash and gold physically.
Police arrested Sheikh Shahid Afridi, Jamir’s driver and accomplice.
Based on Shahid’s information, police recovered 11 bhori of gold from Jamir’s house.
